The Top 10 Films of 2017
A lot of the films I have seen this past year have been amazing. They were thoroughly enjoyable for every second. However, only 10 can make it to the top of the year. These are the films that have stuck out in my mind as the best of the best for the year. All of these films are different and stand out for their own reasons. Each one has something unique about it that made it as memorable as it is.
Top 5 Honorable mentions:
Thor: Ragnarok
Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
The Fate Of The Furious
Despicable Me 3
10. Justice League
Director: Zack Snyder
Writers: Chris Terrio And Joss Whedon
Stars: Ben Affleck And Gal Gadot
There are four superhero movies on this list, however Justice League was the one where I had the most fun watching it. From my understanding, this particular group of heroes have not all appeared on screen together prior to this moment so it was a thrill to see characters like Barry Allen (The Flash) and Victor Stone (Cyborg) finally get their chance to shine on the big screen. Justice League is the superhero film in the DCEU that allows it's audience to take a breath after it's previous films which have been much darker in tone.
9. Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Directors: Joachim Ronning And Espen Sandberg
Writer: Jeff Nathanson
Stars: Johnny Depp And Javier Bardem
Probably one of the most entertaining of the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, Dead Men Tell No Tales expands on the lore and mythology of the series. It's quick pace and quirky characters, both old and new, make the film a fun one to revisit over and over. What made the film for me though, was witnessing an unbelievable performance by Javier Bardem as Captain Salazar.
8. Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 2
Director: James Gunn
Writer: James Gunn
Stars: Christ Pratt And Kurt Russell
The second Guardians of the Galaxy film continues, flawlessly, the story of Star-Lord and his fellow guardians as it sends them on into new perils. The strength of this film is having the characters split up in order to show that for their team to work, they do need to be able to cooperate with each other and not go their own ways. This allows characters like Michael Rooker's Yondu to develop more fully.
7. Coco
Directors: Lee Unkrich And Adrian Molina
Writers: Adrian Molina And Matthew Aldrich
Stars: Anthony Gonzalez And Gael Garcia Bernal
Coco is pure Pixar delight. Lovable characters and phenomenal animation help place it among the Pixar greats along the likes of Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, and the Toy Story Series. The reason I fell in love with Coco is because of the culture that it brought and how it taught its audience about the holiday Dia De Los Muertos.
6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
Director: Rian Johnson
Writer: Rian Johnson
Stars: Daisy Ridley And Mark Hamill
The latest of the Star Wars franchise was definitely not one to disappoint. The story of Rey, Finn, and Poe was continued beautifully in this installment. Rian Johnson's expansion of what J. J. Abrams brought to the series flowed seamlessly together into what is surely to be remembered as a great entry in the much beloved series.
5. Wonder Woman
Director: Patty Jenkins
Writer: Allan Heinberg
Stars: Gal Gadot And Chris Pine
This film from the DCEU is as wondrous as its lead, Diana Prince. Even though she was introduced in Batman Vs. Superman, Wonder Woman's film takes place in a World War 1 timeline that explains how she came to be the hero we know her as today. Gal Gadot's charisma and innocence that she brings to Diana makes her role as the Amazonian princess as enjoyable as the film is as she discovers what the world around her holds.
4. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Director: Jon Watts
Writers: Jonathon Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers
Stars: Tom Holland And Michael Keaton
After many films from Sam Rami (the McGuire lead Spider-Man) and Marc Webb (Garfield's Spider-Man), Jon Watts brought to the table a fresh take on the classic and beloved hero. The origin story of Peter Parker's transformation into the web-slinger was merely talked about and what we got was a story of a young boy trying to maneuver high school while trying to keep his identity secret. Tom Holland's energy as Peter Parker/Spider-Man helps move the film along and keep it entertaining.
3. Murder On The Orient Express
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Writer: Michael Green
Stars: Kenneth Branagh And Michelle Pfeiffer
This latest adaptation of Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express is a cinematic marvel. The shots, effects, writing, and acting all come together to make a masterpiece under Kenneth Branagh's direction. The way Murder On The Orient Express was shot almost gave a sort of a Broadway feel to it as if the blocking of each shot was meant to be seen on stage.
2. Beauty And The Beast
Director: Bill Condon
Writers: Stephen Chbosky And Evan Spilotopoulos
Stars: Emma Watson And Dan Stevens
The remakes of Disney's animated classic only seem to be getting better. After seeing the trailer for the new take on the 1991 classic of Beauty And The Beast and knowing that Alan Menken was returning, I knew the film was in good hands. What ended up being seen was the beloved scenes of the classic plus more that adds to the beauty of it all.
1. The Greatest Showman
Director: Michael Gracey
Writers: Jenny Bicks And Bill Condon
Stars: Hugh Jackman And Michelle Williams
Whenever you think of the circus, a spectacle is what usually comes to mind and The Greatest Showman is the greatest spectacle of the year. Hugh Jackman's performance is one of his best yet and he handles the role of P.T. Barnum with extreme care. The songs, cinematography, and effects help to crown this film as The Greatest Show of the year for me.
